Vessel information
The vessel can carry any type of lumber, logs, bulk grain, class A and C cargo, and general cargo, except for cargo subject to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code (dangerous goods).
The vessel is owned and operated by the sanctioned russian shipping company OJSC Northern Shipping Company (ОАО "Северное морское пароходство"), which is affiliated with the russian Ministry of Defence and provides services under state defence contracts for the transportation of goods for the benefit of the Ministry of Defence.
OJSC Northern Shipping Company is one of the largest shipping companies in north-west russia, engaged in global maritime transport, including along the Northern Sea Route. Its fleet consists of versatile dry cargo vessels capable of carrying all types of cargo, including radioactive and dangerous goods. The fleet includes 30 vessels of various types: 18 transport fleet vessels, 7 dredging fleet vessels, and 5 auxiliary fleet vessels. The company operates liner, tramp, and multimodal shipping; delivers cargo to unequipped shores; tows various facilities; provides technical management (repairs, supply, ship chandling, and warehousing services); offers crew simulator training; corrects nautical charts; and supplies river–sea vessels with inland waterway navigation charts.
In May 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on OJSC Northern Shipping Company and 27 of its vessels – including the Mekhanik Brilin – due to their involvement in the military logistics sector of the russian federation, transporting tanks and other military equipment for the russian armed forces.
Following the imposition of sanctions, the vessel shifted to operating voyages carrying cargo to ports in Türkiye.
