Reasons
The Institute is engaged in the development of dual-use technologies, including:
- an anti-icing coating for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs);
- a material for spacecraft as part of a project to establish a domestic satellite internet system;
- a technology for manufacturing turbine blades for aircraft engines;
- the establishment of photonic chip production using silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, among others.
In addition, Skoltech carries out research and development (R&D) activities under the federal project "Advanced Technologies for Unmanned Aircraft Systems", focusing on the development of manufacturing technology for lattice composite load-bearing structures of unmanned aircraft systems.
In July 2026, the U.S. Department of Defense included the Institute on the list of institutions engaged in activities that pose a threat to U.S. national security interests and imposed a ban on cooperation with Skoltech and the funding of any programs or research involving the Institute or its employees.
Skoltech cooperates with russian defense-industrial enterprises, including the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), JSC Research and Production Corporation Uralvagonzavod, State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after N. E. Zhukovsky (TsAGI), PJSC Yakovlev, and JSC Central Research Institute of Special Machine Building (TsNIISM).
