Vessel information
The vessel is capable of transporting lumber, logs, bulk grain, Class A and C cargoes, and general cargo, excluding cargo classified under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.
The vessel is owned and operated by the designated russian shipping company OJSC Northern Shipping Company (ОАО "Северное морское пароходство"), which is affiliated with the Ministry of Defence of the russian federation and provides services under state defence contracts for the carriage of goods in support of the Ministry of Defence.
OJSC Northern Shipping Company is one of the largest shipping companies in north-west russia, engaged in global maritime transportation, including along the Northern Sea Route. Its fleet consists of multipurpose dry cargo vessels capable of transporting all types of cargo, including radioactive and hazardous materials. The fleet includes 30 vessels of various types: 18 transport vessels, 7 dredging vessels, and 5 service/auxiliary vessels. The company’s activities include liner, tramp, and multimodal shipping, cargo delivery to unequipped shorelines, towing operations, technical management (repair, supply, ship chandlery, and warehousing services), crew training, updating nautical charts, and providing mixed (river– sea) navigation vessels with inland waterway charts.
In May 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on 27 vessels of OJSC Northern Shipping Company, including the Mekhanik Yartsev, as well as on the company itself, due to their involvement in the military logistics sector of the russian federation, specifically transporting tanks and other military equipment for the russian armed forces.
Since November 2022, the vessel has been operating on the St. Petersburg– Kaliningrad route to transport goods whose rail transit through Lithuania has been prohibited.
