Built under the P-2790 project, the vessel holds a Dynpos-2 classification and Arc4 ice class and is among the most technically advanced and well-equipped geological survey vessels in the world. It has been involved in engineering, geological, and geocryological mapping of the russian Arctic shelf, enabling the assessment of the region’s oil and gas potential. It is capable of drilling parametric and exploration wells to depths of up to 500 m in water depths of up to 500 m, drilling engineering and geological wells to depths of up to 400 m in water depths of up to 1,100 m, conducting geotechnical studies of soils in boreholes at depths of up to 1,800 m, studying soil sections and their characteristics using onboard devices to a depth of up to 40 m in water depths of up to 2,500 m, and collecting bottom soil samples at unlimited sea depths. The vessel is owned by the designated russian company JSC Amige (АО "Амиге"), which is managed by russia’s largest geological exploration holding, the designated JSC Rosgeo (АО "Росгео"). It has been engaged in projects for Gazprom (ПАО "Газпром"), Rosneft (ПАО "НК "Роснефть"), Novatek (ПАО "Новатэк"), and Lukoil (ПАО "Лукойл"), and may play a role in substantiating russia’s claims regarding the location of the outer boundary of its continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean. It has conducted exploratory drilling just a few kilometres from the maritime border with the United States. In February 2024, the United States imposed sanctions on the Bavenit.
