Built according to the P-2790 project, it has a Dynpos-2 classification and Arc4 ice class, and is one of the most technically advanced and equipped geological survey vessels in the world. It is involved in engineering, geological and geocryological mapping of the russian Arctic shelf, which allows us to assess the oil and gas potential of the region. It is capable of drilling parametric and exploration wells to a depth of up to 500 m in water depths of up to 500 m, drilling engineering and geological wells to a depth of up to 400 m in water depths of up to 1,100 m, carry out geotechnical studies of soils in boreholes at depths of up to 1800 m, study soil sections and their characteristics with onboard devices to a depth of up to 40 m at a water depth of up to 2500 m, collect samples of bottom soils at unlimited sea depths. The vessel belongs to the sanctioned russian company JSC Amige, which is managed by russia's largest geological exploration holding, the sanctioned company JSC Rosgeo. The vessel participates in projects of Gazprom, Rosneft, Novatek, Lukoil, and can resolve the issue of confirming the location of the outer boundary of the russian continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean. It conducted exploratory drilling a few kilometres from USA maritime border. In February 2024, USA imposed sanctions on the "Bavenit" vessel.
