The vessel is involved in schemes of stealing Ukrainian grain from the TOT of Ukraine. In particular, in November 2024 and May 2025, the vessel transported wheat from the temporarily occupied port of Berdiansk, Zaporizhzhia region.
In April 2023, the vessel was sanctioned by USA due to its ties to the sanctioned russian state-owned company JSC GTLK. JSC GTLK specializes in air, sea, rail, passenger transportation, automotive, special equipment for russian companies in the transport industry, investment activities for the development of the transport infrastructure of russia, controlled by the ministry of transport of russian federation. The CEO of JSC GTLK is a sanctioned Ditrikh Yevgeniy Ivanovich. The owner and manager of the vessel is a russian company Alpha LLC (TIN 6164106688), affiliated with GTLK, specializing in wholesale of liquid, solid, gaseous fuels, wholesale of grain, and maritime cargo transport activities.
On November 25, 2025, Ukraine imposed sanctions on the vessel.

The vessel is affiliated with the sanctioned russian company OJSC Northern Shipping Company (ОАО "Северное морское пароходство", TIN 2901008432), which provides services under state defence contracts for the transportation of goods on behalf of the russian ministry of defence. Since 2014, the company has been an active participant in a major logistics chain for the development of infrastructure in the Arctic under contracts with the russian ministry of defence. OJSC Northern Shipping Company also conducts maritime cargo transportation under contract for the sanctioned State Grain Operator State Unitary Enterprise (ГУП "Государственный зерновой оператор", TIN 9001011019), registered in the TOT of Zaporizhzhia region, Melitopol.
In May 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on OJSC Northern Shipping Company and 27 of its vessels, including the vessel IMO 8904379, due to their involvement in the military logistics sector of the russian federation, transporting tanks and other military equipment for the russian armed forces.

OJSC "Northern shipping company" is one of the largest shipping companies in north-west russia, engaged in shipping worldwide, including along the Northern Sea Route. The company's fleet consists of multipurpose dry bulk carriers that transport all types of cargo, including radioactive and hazardous cargo. It comprises 30 vessels for various purposes: 18 vessels of the transport fleet, 7 of the dredging fleet and 5 of the auxiliary fleet. The company carries out sea liner, tram, multimodal transport, cargo delivery to unequipped shores, towing of various objects, technical management (repair, supply, shipping and warehousing services), provides crew training, corrects nautical charts, and provides mixed (river-sea) navigation vessels with inland waterway charts.

The vessel has been implicated in the export of grain from Port Sevastopol (TOT of Crimea, Ukraine) to Venezuela with its Automatic Identification System (AIS) disabled. Since 20 May 2024, it has remained in the anchorage area of Port Puerto Cabello with AIS enabled but was likely denied docking due to its inclusion in the European Union’s 14th sanctions package.
The vessel is owned by the designated russian transport company TK Northern Project LLC (ООО "ТК Северный проект"), which specialises in maritime freight transport via the Northern Sea Route, provides year-round cargo delivery to ports in the Far North and along the Arctic coast, facilitates cargo flows to Europe and Asia, and operates an unrestricted-navigation dry cargo fleet with a deadweight capacity of 7,000–12,000 tons. The company transports general, groupage, mixed, and oversized cargoes, special machinery, equipment, and containerised goods, and holds a licence for the carriage of dangerous goods of all categories.
In May 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on TK Northern Project LLC and 15 of its vessels, including vessel IMO 9079169, for transporting weapons to the russian federation on behalf of the company.
In June 2024, the European Union imposed sanctions on vessel IMO 9079169 for its role in grain theft schemes involving Ukrainian grain.
On 17 October 2024, Switzerland imposed sanctions on the vessel for promoting or supporting actions or policies that undermine or threaten the economic existence or food security of Ukraine (including the transportation of stolen Ukrainian grain), or that harm the preservation of Ukraine’s cultural heritage (including the transportation of stolen Ukrainian cultural property).
In November 2025, Canada imposed sanctions on the vessel.
