Vessel information
The vessel is designed to carry out geological surveys of the seabed and deep ocean zones, prospecting and exploration of mineral resources, environmental monitoring, search and survey of various underwater objects, and engineering and geological studies of bottom soils.
The vessel was involved in marine research as part of the Arctic Connect submarine communication line from Europe to Asia, a project to search for minerals in the Atlantic under an agreement with the International Seabed Authority, etc.
The vessel belongs to the sanctioned russian company Polar Marine Geological Expedition JSC, which is a subsidiary of the sanctioned Rosgeologia JSC, a russian state-owned diversified geological holding. In russia, Rosgeologia and its subsidiaries provide a range of geophysical services for the prospecting and exploration of oil and gas fields, controlled by the russian government.
In February 2024, the United States imposed sanctions on a vessel ultimately managed by Rosgeologia and used for geophysical surveys and offshore exploration drilling in russia, as well as in international projects on behalf of the russian government.
