The person is the director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science of the russian federation "Institute of Archeology of the RAS", which organises illegal archaeological excavations and provides financial support to numerous archaeological expeditions on the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula.
It is known that from 2014 to 2023, the staff of the IA RAS on behalf of this organisation received more than 101 permits for archaeological work on the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula. With the organisational and financial support of Makarov M.A., the Institute"s staff annually conducts a number of episodes of illegal archaeological work.
In particular, due to the activities of the so-called "New Construction Archaeological Expedition of the IA RAS" in 2017-2019, more than a hundred archaeological sites were destroyed or damaged during the construction of the so-called "Taurida Highway", and in 2022-2023, during the construction of the propaganda complex "New Chersonesos" with the participation of IA RAS employees, the cultural layer of the UNESCO monument "The Ancient City of Chersonesos and its Chora" was destroyed on an area of about 70 thousand m². m², and about 5 million items of Ukrainian cultural property were seized and moved.
