Hillfort (Roman camp) Kadykivske
Description of the incident location
Kadykovka is a district of Balaklava, located on both sides of the city's main street, Novikov Street. In the past, it was a suburb of Balaklava - the village of Kady-Koy ("Village of the Judge"). The remains of a Roman military camp were discovered on the territory of Kadykivka (between 40th Anniversary of October, Novikova, Raketna streets and 40th Anniversary of October Square), dating from the second - first third of the third century. During the excavations, the remains of a sanctuary with altars dedicated to the deities Jupiter Dolikhen, Hercules and Vulcan were discovered on the site at 10 40-letnia Zhovtnia Street, dating from the second - third/ fourth centuries (existence of the sanctuary: second - 20th years. third century).
After the occupation by representatives of the russian federation, the territory of the archaeological site is being actively developed: on a 465-square-meter plot of land that is part of the cultural heritage site, between Novikova and Molodohvardiytsiv streets, it is planned to build a residential building 4 meters high and slightly more than 60 meters in area.
In 2022, representatives of the russian federation began illegal archaeological work on the territory of the land plot where the project for the construction and reconstruction of the market is being implemented in the area of 40 rokiv Oktyabrya Street, which is partially located on the territory of the cultural heritage site "Kadykivske settlement (Roman camp) of the second century BC - first century AD; II-IV centuries; XIV-XVIII centuries". On the investigated territory, burials of the XVIII-XIX centuries were damaged and artifacts were removed, which are represented by fragments of ceramics, in particular of the Roman period, II-IV centuries.
The russians will continue to destroy the unique archaeological site of the Roman fort of the II-III centuries in Balaklava's Kadykivka in 2025. The land plot, which is partially located on the territory of the cultural heritage site, is being built up for a 4,500-square-meter shopping center, while another plot is privately owned for individual housing construction.
