Description of the incident location
The Church of St. John the Baptist in Kerch is the oldest functioning church in Crimea, built in the eighth century, and is a unique historical monument of Byzantine architecture. It is one of the oldest Christian churches not only in Ukraine but also in southern Europe. It is located in the historical center at 3a Dmytrova Street in Kerch, Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The church was taken under state protection as an architectural monument in 1963, and in June 2020 it was listed as a cultural heritage site of national importance in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine under No. 010048.
In 2017, the Russian-controlled Kerch administration entered into a lease agreement for a 1033m2 land plot within the monument's protection zone for the purpose of "hotel services", valid until September 30, 2059. Since 2019, representatives of the Russian Federation have been conducting illegal construction and archaeological work on the said territory.
As part of these works, the archaeological layer was destroyed to a depth of 3.6 meters and cultural property was seized. The cultural layer below this mark was filled with concrete. Also, after an emergency caused by heavy rainfall in the summer of 2021, the church suffered significant damage. As of today, due to the negligence of the occupation authorities, the monument continues to collapse.
