Description of the incident location
Kytei was a small, well-fortified city of the Bosporus state on the Black Sea coast, located on the territory of 4.5 hectares on a hilly coastal plain 38 km southwest of Pantikapaion near the modern village of Zavitne, Leninsky district of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The city under the names Kit, Kideaka, etc. is mentioned in the works of such ancient authors as Pseudo-Skylak, Gaius Pliny Secundus, Claudius Ptolemy and Stephen of Byzantium.
After the occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea by Russia in 2014, excavations continued in violation of Ukrainian and international law. As of 2021, at least the federal budgetary cultural institution "State Hermitage", the Institute of International Relations and World History of the federal state autonomous educational institution of higher education "Lobachevsky National Research University of Nizhny Novgorod" and the federal state autonomous educational institution of higher education "Belgorod State National Research University" are involved in illegal activities at the site of the Kitay settlement. The actions of the occupation authorities, which were expressed in illegal expropriation, illegal archaeological excavations, during which archaeological artifacts were seized, are a violation of international humanitarian law.
