Publicly supports russia's invasion of Ukraine, putin's policies and the kremlin regime, actively spreads pro-kremlin propaganda, and also threatens critics of the war with mass repressions, concentration camps, re-education and sterilization. He is a permanent member of the Izborsky Club - a community of experts studying russian foreign and domestic policy, one of the key tasks of which is "to promote the formation of a powerful political and ideological coalition of patriot statesmen, an imperial front that opposes the manipulations carried out in russian politics by foreign centers of influence and the "fifth column" from within the country".
Since 2018, he has been putin's confidant in the presidential elections, and is also a member of the Central Headquarters of the All-russian Public Movement "People's Front "For russia"" (under sanctions from the EU, Canada, Switzerland and Ukraine), which was created at putin's initiative to monitor the implementation of his decrees/instructions and conduct campaign activities in the electoral processes.
In 2020, he joined the working group to prepare proposals for amendments to the Constitution of the russian federation, which would allow putin to be re-elected for two more terms in 2024 and 2030.

In March 2014, Shakhnazarov supported russia's annexation of Ukrainian Crimea and signed a letter to putin in support of the annexation.
