Openly supports russia's war against Ukraine, spreading kremlin propaganda narratives, supports putin's policies and the kremlin regime. He is one of the key ideologists of russia's annexation of the Ukrainian Crimea.
He was the head of the russian delegation at the negotiations between russia and Ukraine, which were held at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

As the head of the Interdepartmental Commission on Historical Education, he ensures "a planned and offensive approach to the issue of upholding the national interests of the russian federation, related to the preservation of historical memory and the development of educational activities in the field of history." The commission coordinates the activities of the scientific community and government bodies to develop a unified approach to historical education, prevent attempts to "falsify history", and analyze the activities of foreign structures that "harm the national interests of russia in the historical sphere". Medinsky is also the head of the All-russian public-state organization "russian Military Historical Society" (RVIT), founded by putin in 2012. The organization's activities are aimed at studying and popularizing the military history of russia, as well as preserving objects of military-historical cultural heritage. In addition, regional branches of RVI operate, including in the TOT of Ukraine, and also carry out military-patriotic education of children and youth in the TOT of Ukraine, and their preparation for service in the armed forces of the russian federation. Veterans of special forces and officers of the airborne troops participate in the organization of children's camps of the RVIT, the curriculum includes a simplified "young fighter course", the study of military history and military traditions.
He participated in the creation of a historical manual for schoolchildren "History of Crimea" in 2014 and is a co-author of a history textbook for 11th graders, published in 2023, which completely rewrote history from 1970 to 2000, reduced the section on general history and expanded the sections on Asia, Africa and Latin America. The section on the war in Ukraine has 17 paragraphs, including: "Ukraine is a neo-Nazi state", "SMO and russian society" and "russia is a country of heroes".
In 2020, by a closed decree of putin, he was awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky. In 2021, he received an honorary diploma from the head of the Chechen Republic, in 2022 - the Order of Friendship of the so-called "LPR" and the Order of the Republic of the so-called "DPR".
He has repeatedly visited the temporarily occupied Crimea.
