Description of the incident location
Cembalo is a Genoese, later Ottoman fortress in Crimea, built in the 14th century on the site of a Greek settlement and a Byzantine fort. It is an architectural monument that is currently located within the Balaklava district of Sevastopol. The remains of the defensive and retaining walls, four towers, a donjon, and the remains of Christian churches, residential and commercial buildings have survived to this day. The ruins of the Chembalo fortress in Balaklava are one of the rarest examples of Western European fortification art of the 14th and 15th centuries in our country.
In 2010, Ukraine inscribed the site "Genoese trading posts and fortifications - from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea" on the UNESCO Tentative World Heritage List, of which Cembalo/Balaklava is a part. Since 2011, Ukraine has been developing this nomination jointly with Italy; later they were joined by Turkey and Greece. Due to the temporary occupation of Crimea by russia in 2014, this work was suspended.
In the period 2014-2022, a group of people under the leadership of Deputy Director General of the State Hermitage Museum S.B. Adaksina systematically conducted illegal archaeological excavations, during which archaeological values were seized.
