Description:
The painting depicts a classroom with two rows of desks and students (16 people) sitting behind them. Between the rows, on the left, a teacher in a soldier's uniform stands near the desk, facing forward with his head slightly tilted to the left, his right arm bent at the elbow at chest level, his left hand at his waist. On the right breast is the Order of the Red Banner. On the right side of the canvas, a boy and a girl are sitting at the first desk. The boy in a light shirt is 3/4 turn to the left (looking at the teacher), his left hand is on the desk. The girl in a dark green dress, black apron and red tie is 3/4 turn to the left, listening intently, her chin resting on her bent elbows. To the left, at the first desk, a boy in black, head in front, figure in 3/4 turn to the left, mouth slightly open, hands on desk. A field bag is open on the edge of the desk. In the background, on a gray wall, three posters, on the right - Toidze's poster "Motherland Calls", on the right - a round iron stove. On the back is the author's inscription on the stretcher: "Nevelshtein Samuel Grigorievich, 1903 Sketch for the painting "History Lesson", 65.5 x 97.5 cm. 1965-66 Leningrad". The left and right sides of the canvas are scuffed. In the lower right corner of the paint layer falling off. The canvas is warped.

Description of the incident location
It was opened on May 27, 1978, in the former City Hall building, an architectural monument of the early 20th century. As of 2022 (before the robbery), the museum's collection included more than 13 thousand works of art and was one of the most interesting museum collections in Ukraine. It includes works of Ukrainian and foreign painting, graphics, sculpture, and decorative and applied arts. From October 31 to November 4, 2022, the Kherson Art Museum was looted by the russian occupiers, and more than 10,000 of its most valuable exhibits were stolen. The cargo was sent to Crimea, and the works (all or part of them) ended up in the Simferopol Central Museum of Tavrida. It is unknown whether everything is still there.
