Description of the incident location
Near the site of Chersonesos Tavriya was an ancient necropolis with early Christian burials, as well as a suburb. Here one could trace changes in the funerary rite, the emergence of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary on the Maiden's Hill, which functioned after the death of Chersonesos. This monastery is mentioned in Turkish sources of the sixteenth century.
As part of the project of the so-called "New Chersonesos Historical and Archaeological Park," the occupiers carried out an act of illegal archaeological excavations and illegal construction on the territory of military units on Drevniy and Yeroshenko streets, which is part of the prospective protected area and buffer zone of the protected area of the Tauric Chersonesos settlement. During these excavations, the cultural layer of the Ancient, Middle Ages, Modern and Contemporary periods was destroyed on an area of 85,797 square meters.
An ancient necropolis with burials performed according to the rites of inhumation and cremation, crypts with diverse and rich funerary equipment, and ritual architectural structures were destroyed; an early Christian necropolis with burial crypts with complex architecture and carved into the rock; hydraulic structures for water reserves (cisterns and wells), nymphaea, baptismal font; household and industrial buildings, roads, retaining and defensive walls; French shanets of the Crimean War of 1854-1855yurt-like structures of the nineteenth century; outbuildings of the early twentieth century; traces of the defense of Sevastopol during World War II.
A total of 6,495,877 items were recovered, of which 351,780 items of museum value were stolen and the rest destroyed. More than 900,000 bone remains of osteological and anthropological material were recovered.
