Ancient city of Panticapaeum archaeological site
Description of the incident location
Panticapaeum was an ancient Greek city founded at the end of the seventh century BC by immigrants from Miletus on the site of modern Kerch. Near the city there was a necropolis that was unlike other necropolises in that, in addition to the ground burials common to the Hellenes at that time, the Panticapaeum necropolis consisted of long chains of mounds stretching along the roads from the city to the steppe. The ruins of Panticapaeum are a cultural heritage site of national importance in Ukraine. Since 2014, Russian archaeologists under the auspices of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts have been conducting illegal archaeological excavations of the "Upper Plateau" sections of the monument and appropriating the seized cultural property of Ukraine. In 2024, Vladimir Tolstikov (the head of the expedition) stated that the continuation of archaeological excavations at the Ancient City of Pantikapaeum site would bring russia world-class cultural, scientific, and educational facilities.
