Description of the incident location
Before the military invasion and occupation, the Kherson Regional Museum of Local Lore had one of the largest collections of antiquities in southern Ukraine.
The museum complex is located in four separate buildings, known as the Local History Museum, the Litmuseum, the Museum of Nature, and the Museum of History of Kakhovka. The Litmuseum housed valuable old editions, while the Museum of Nature had one of the largest exhibits in Ukraine - a 30-meter-long whale skeleton.
The buildings that house the museum's exposition are nineteenth-century architectural monuments. The institution was founded in 1890 at the suggestion of Ukrainian archaeologist and local historian Viktor Ivanovych Hoshkevych. The museum's collections included more than 180,000 items, of which more than 10,000 were on display. The russian military not only took away the weapons of different nations and times on display, but also looted the collections. The museum's arsenal included medieval weapons discovered by archaeologists in the Kherson region. The World War II exhibition was also devastated. There were no personal belongings, awards, or weapons of the war participants in the four museum halls.
