Reasons
He supports putin's policies and russia's war against Ukraine by spreading kremlin propaganda narratives. In particular, he posted a video on his Instagram account with putin at a concert rally held in March 2022 in honor of the anniversary of russia's annexation of Crimea, titled "For peace without nazism! For russia! For the president".
As a functionary of international sports federations, he lobbies for the interests of russian athletes in the international sports arena. In particular, he criticizes the requirements for russian athletes to condemn hostilities against Ukraine in order to be admitted to international competitions and calls such restrictions humiliating and discriminatory, and accuses international federations of politicizing sports.
In addition, in 2023, Agapitov, as the head of the FTAR, proposed to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) an alternative version of the declaration for the admission of russian athletes, which consists in the absence of any political distinctions between athletes.
He publicly expressed his views on the obligation of athletes and all citizens of the russian federation "to fulfill their duty honestly when they receive a call-up to the army".
