He was putin's confidant in the 2012 and 2018 elections and was a member of the initiative group to nominate putin as a candidate in the 2024 presidential election. He is a member of the Central Headquarters of the All-russian Public Movement "People's Front for russia" (under sanctions from the EU, Canada, Switzerland and Ukraine), which was created at putin's initiative to monitor the implementation of his decrees/orders and to conduct campaigning activities in the electoral process. He is also a member of the putin Team movement, which supports putin in the presidential election.
He is a member of the Public Council of the Investigative Committee of the russian federation.
In March 2014, he publicly supported russia's annexation of Ukrainian Crimea and signed a letter to putin in support of the annexation.
In February 2022, a number of world theaters and philharmonic societies refused to cooperate with Gergiev because of his refusal to express his opinion on russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. Instead, in March 2022, Gergiev performed at the rally-concert "For a world without nazism! For russia! For the president" in honor of the anniversary of the annexation of Crimea and in support of russia's military aggression against Ukraine. Also, in March 2022, putin took the initiative to transfer the leadership of the State Academic Bolshoi Theater of russia to Gergiev, thus making him the general director of the two main theaters of the russian federation. Gergiev's own charitable foundation, sponsored by VTB Bank, russian Railways, Sberbank, oligarch Alisher Usmanov, the Moscow government and other state organizations, also benefited from the war. In particular, in 2022, the fund's net profit quadrupled from 138 to 578 million rubles.
He actively defends putin's foreign policy. Involves his orchestra in large-scale productions used by Kremlin propaganda. Gergiev's loyalty to putin is rewarded with honorary titles, awards and government grants for his projects.
In May 2023, with the support of the regional government, he organized a charity concert for the families of russian military and armed forces veterans.
Also in May 2023, he was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, second class. As part of his activities, Gergiev receives state funding. Under government contracts, companies and institutions headed by Gergiev have provided services worth more than RUB 1.6 billion.
In November 2024, he was awarded a certificate of honor by the government of the russian federation "for his great contribution to the preparation and holding of the X St. Petersburg International Forum of United Cultures."
In August 2008, Gergiev and the orchestra performed in support of Russian aggression against Georgia near the Government House in Tskhinvali, South Ossetia, occupied by russian troops. In January 2009, he was awarded the gratitude of the president of the russian federation "for holding a concert of the Mariinsky Theater Grand Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Valery Gergiev in support of the residents of Tskhinvali who suffered during the Georgian-Ossetian conflict" and the Order of the Uatsamonga "for his courage and high patriotism, invaluable assistance and support to the people of South Ossetia during the liquidation of the consequences of the Georgian aggression in August 2008". In May 2016, the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra conducted by Gergiev gave a concert in the amphitheater of captured Palmyra in Syria for russian and Syrian soldiers. For this performance, Gergiev was awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky "for special merits in the preparation and conduct of humanitarian foreign policy actions that contribute to the strengthening of peace and friendship between peoples," the medal of the Ministry of Defense "For the liberation of Palmyra" and the prize of the Ministry of Defense in the field of culture and art "for cultural and educational projects."
