On September 23, 2022, he took part in the rally "We do not abandon our own" organized by the all-russian public movement "People's Front for russia" dedicated to the referendum in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. He spoke during a campaign rally-concert in honor of the anniversary of the annexation of Crimea entitled "For a world without Nazism! For russia! For the President", which took place on March 18, 2022 at the Luzhniki Stadium. He installed the military symbol "Z" on the facade of the Oleg Tabakov Theater in Moscow, which is used by russian propaganda to support the russian invasion of Ukraine. On September 30, 2024, he took part in the concert rally "russia, Donbass, Novorossiya: Together Forever!". During his speeches at mass propaganda events, he calls for the continuation of missile and bomb attacks on the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine. In 2024, the Union of Theater Workers of the russian federation, under the leadership of Mashkov, opened its regional branch in the TOT of Ukraine.
He was repeatedly awarded personally by putin, which indicates his closeness to the kremlin regime.
In May 2023, the Security Service of Ukraine notified Mashkov of suspicion of encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine, justification, recognition as lawful, denial of russia's armed aggression against Ukraine, glorification of its participants and violation of the procedure for entering and leaving the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. In November 2024, Mashkov was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison and his apartment in Odesa was confiscated. Mashkov's daughter lives in the United States.
